house in the mountains

Overlooking a small arroyo three miles west of the town Plaza in Taos, New Mexico, this house also commands a view of Taos Mountain to the north. The rooms are planned around a sequence of views both near and distant; moving through the house, one is always oriented toward natural light and a view to the landscape. The main body of the house contains a single large living space as well as a room off the kitchen which can serve either as a study or a guest room. Two more bedrooms and a shared bath comprise a wing to the east. The exterior walls of the house, together with a garden wall to the south, define an entry court planted in grape vines and fruit trees. Thermal comfort is achieved by means of radiant floor heating in the cooler months and natural ventilation and window shading in the summer. No air conditioning is required.
